The last few seasons have been challenging for BC vineyards, and the provincial government recently extended a program to help wineries source grapes from outside the province for the 2025 production year. While this created some confusion—especially since many wineries, including us, are reporting a strong 2025 harvest—we want to offer you full transparency.

Why Was the Replacement Program Extended?

Even with a healthy 2025 harvest, the overall BC grape supply is still over 10,000 tonnes short of market demand. The lingering effects of the 2024 freeze created a supply gap, and it takes 3–5 years for replanted vineyards to fully mature. The program extension is meant to support the industry’s stability while vineyards recover.

Why the Different Outcomes?

You may be hearing about a mix of outcomes, and it’s true—no two situations are the same. The 2024 freeze affected vineyards differently based on their location, varietal, and elevation. For example, cold-hardy grapes like Riesling fared better than Syrah.

We are thrilled to report that JoieFarm had a full, healthy, and vibrant harvest! This is why you’ll see a mix of wines in the market for the next few years:

  • Some made from 100% BC grapes (like your 2025 JoieFarm releases).
  • Others produced under the temporary replacement program (with grapes from outside BC). All replacement wines will be clearly labeled as “Made in Canada from Imported Ingredients”.

How This Affects Your JoieFarm Wines

The simple answer? It doesn’t!

JoieFarm is NOT participating in the 2025 vintage replacement program. We believe in the quality of this year’s local harvest, and our 2025 wines will be produced exclusively from 100% BC fruit.

This means your 2025 wines will carry VQA certification and have full BC appellation transparency, a promise of local quality you can trust.

Why We Didn’t Need to Import Grapes

Our strong 2025 harvest is the direct result of the deep commitment we’ve made to the long-term health and resilience of our vineyards over the past 3–4 years.

  • Resilient Vines: Our investments in careful research, precision farming, and optimizing varietal placement made our vines healthier and more resilient, allowing them to bounce back better from the 2024 freeze.
  • Forward Thinking: We started replanting over the last three years, guided by soil studies and long-term planning.

We believe this effort positions us for a consistent supply of high-quality grapes, and we can’t wait for our 2025 wines to showcase this hard work in your glass.

A Few Words from Richard Charnock

JOIEFARM VITICULTURE MANAGER AND WINEMAKER

“I’m thrilled to share that the 2025 season has been a gift—a balanced growing year with exceptionally clean fruit that’s set the stage for what I believe will be a truly classic Okanagan vintage.

The whites are especially exciting, with our Chardonnay promising to be spectacular. Our Pinot Noir is shaping up to be elegant and expressive , and we’re seeing healthy vineyard recovery with encouraging yields—a promising sign for the vintages ahead.

All signs point to 2025 being one of the best years in recent history, reminiscent of the standout 2022 vintage but with a touch more ripeness. We are truly excited to share these wines with you as they develop, and we remain deeply grateful for your continued support on this journey.

Cheers, Richard”
